Planting trees under a tree

Today at 9.30am the leaders of Pakaatan Rakyaat met at the Perak DAP to discuss urgent political matters.

As I was reaching near the venue I was shocked to see some workers gathered around the “Democratic Tree”. I also noticed the presence of the local council lorry and workers. I immediately summon my secretary Sugu to rush to the area and take photos of what was been done around the tree.

Subsequently after the meeting Sdr.Nga and I left to the ascertain what the workers had done. I was surprised the workers had planted some 19 trees all around the Democratic tree. Why 19 someone asked me when I was there. Some one shouted its 19 young trees because tomorrow is the birthday of the Sultan!

Why plant trees under a big tree? The young trees will surely suffer as the sun light is prevented from reaching the young trees. Who had ordered the planting of the 19 trees? If the chaps had any common sense surely this would not have happen. But alas this seems not to be the case! We hope the trees would be dug out soon and those who ordered planting of the 19 trees will apologize to the public.

In the process of planting the roots of the “democratic tree” was uprooted and damaged. All this been done to kill the tree. The: democratic tree” is now the most visited place in Ipoh by tourist and the like.

It was announced yesterday that a new plaque would be erected at the very place where the young trees have been planted. To prevent this installation the trees are been planted. Come what may we will proceed with the erection of the peoples plaque on the 1st of May 2009.

We want to hear from you

Public opinion is very important for our lives everyday to the extent that it create changes in the way people conduct their activities. It helps society make a better judgment of situation that occurs daily.

The negative thought of public opinion helps us discover a more positive way to find our solutions. Public opinion gives an insight to what we don't notice or hardly notice happening in our society or in our very lives. The strength of public opinions put proper prospects in place.

Sometimes it leaves room for individuals to think wisely and find solution to its problems. Public opinion exposes the ugly deeds of our day to day living and brings us to society to be examined and see where we stand.

Public opinion could also incite others. It could give way to someone acting disorderly in the society. Definitely, it is also negatively. In all God has given every man his or her sound mind to think and judge wisely. So, not all judgments is right. But extract the truth out of Public opinion to get to your right way and stick to the path.

Council to review new working hours

A CHANGE in working hours for Ipoh City Council general workers has not gone down well with some of the staff, councillor M. Kulasegaran said.

The new working hours from 7am to 4pm, implemented in September, had disrupted the routine of some of the workers, he said.

Raising the matter during a winding-up speech yesterday, Kulasegaran said he was told that Muslim workers found the new time to be a problem for them, particularly during Friday prayers.

“There were also women workers who found it difficult to return to work until 4pm after having gone home for lunch,” said Kulasegaran, who is also Ipoh Barat MP.

“General workers, who had to take extra work in the evening to supplement their family incomes, also found it problematic because they could only start work later,” he said.
The former working hours from 6.45am to 2pm were changed in August, beginning with the Manjung Municipal Council, Kula-segaran said.

“When the new hours were implemented by the Ipoh City Council in September, I received many complaints from the workers,” he said.

“I hope the council will look into the matter and review the policy,” he said. Datuk Bandar Roshidi Hashim, at a press conference, acknowledged that certain groups of the 900-odd general workers found the new working hours to be problematic.

He added that the council would review the working hours following their complaints. On exploration work for the lost tunnel linking Ipoh Town Hall and the High Court, Roshidi said the council would be seeking the expertise of Heritage Department Com-missioner Datuk Prof Zuraina Majid.

He hoped work to look for the tunnel would start next month.

New Year Gift For Poor Students

On the 31/12 day of 2008, 600 poor children from different primary schools in Ipoh city happily received their gift from the Majlis Bandaraya Ipoh: RM 50 cash plus a new school bag each.

The “Program Bantuan Persekolahan 2009” program was initiated by the Majlis Bandaraya Ipoh as a response to the poverty. Cooperating with the State Government, MBI decided to sponsor 600 poor students selected from different city zone. These students are either orphans, from single-parent families, or the children of laid-off workers.
Attending the ceremony were YAB Menteri Besar Perak, together with the City Mayor, Ipoh Barat MP, local councilor’s and as well as the local residents.
Many of the students said "I have a new bag now!, My old bag was totally worn out now and I really longed for a new one. I like the colour of the bag, symbolizing enthusiasm, like our attitude towards life."

Chicken Market in Deplorable Status

The main chicken market of Ipoh (near the Central market) was built some over 100 years ago. It has more then 15 chicken slaughtering stalls. The beauty of the building is the fact the structures are not nailed at all. Many of the locals were not aware of this until one of the main beams gave way some 1 week ago. The whole market structure is now unsafe.

We visited the market together with local, Ipoh local council (MBI) officers and local councilors Sdr.Ding.

We are given to understand that the market has been left without any proper maintenance. It seems some over 15years ago the MBI had made had made proposals to construct a new wet market but noting has taken place to date. I wonder why? I guess the priority of the then MBI bosses were to up grade markets out side central Ipoh and thus neglecting the local markets.
To me this market must up graded and should not be demolished. I am meeting the Mayor tomorrow to discuss about this matter.
